Ramakrishna Sarada Mission, New Delhi

During the birth Centenary of Sister Nivedita in the year 1967-68, the members of Sarada Mahila Samity of New Delhi conceived a noble idea of establishing an educational and cultural centre in the name of Sister Nivedita as a Centenary Memorial to her. They felt that this centre should be under the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission, Dakshineswar. So they invited the Mission to start centre at New Delhi. In response to this, the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission started a branch on 14th April 1970 at Hauz Khas, a posh colony in south Delhi, with the aim of spreading cultural & spiritual ideals among women & children irrespective of caste, creed or financial status.

With a belt of lush green trees, and surrounded by beautiful flower-beds, the centre has a serene atmosphere. Starting with a single educational project, it has now developed into a hive of activities with the co-operation & benevolence of friends and well-wishers. Special mention must be made of the singular efforts of Mira Sawhney, the first President of the Managing Committee and a member of the Sarada Mahila Samiti, for her drive and initiative in raising funds for the Ashrama building landscaping a beautiful garden with the help of many devotees.

Nivedita Vidya Mandir : This is a Pre-Primary and Primary School for children and it provides a sound base of Indian values, tradition and culture closely modelled on Sister Nivedita’s ideas, within the framework of modern educational system. As an educationist, Nivedita’s contribution is remarkable. Bharatiya or Indianness was the very core of her projects and her message to the people of India was ‘Worship India. Contemplate on India.’ All her thoughts on education were chiefly meant to channelize the energy of the student-world towards ‘nation-making’ or building a strong, united India.

The main object of Nivedita Vidya Mandir is to provide the right input to help the children grow up keeping these ideals in sight. The number of students in Vidya Mandir is 250.

Students celebrate Sports day, School Anniversary and Independence Day with inspiring speeches of our national leaders and an episode from any National leader’s or any part of our freedom struggle is enacted by the children and they also sing patriotic songs with full gusto in one voice echoing the love for the motherland.

The second project is the Vivekananda Balmandir for children of age group 8 to 14. It was started on 16th August 1970, with the purpose of acquainting the children with the elementary knowledge of the scriptures and the history, traditions, culture and way of life in our country. This is done through reading original scriptures, stories, dramatics, music and recitation. Classes are held on Sunday afternoons by our monastic sisters. Balmandir has its own multi-lingual library. At present there are 53 children on roll in this project.

Sarada Mandir: The third project is Sarada Mandir. It was started in 1977 for the financially needy girls of Shahpurjat village near Hauz khas. Girls of Classes V to XII studying in government schools attend special free coaching classes in English, Science and Mathematics. They also learn music, elocution and dramatics. Competitions are held to provide these students an opportunity to discover their talents. Food, clothes and medicines are given to them regularly. Many of them get their school uniforms and fees. There are approximately 127 girls on roll in Sarada Mandir.

Chandramani Balwadi: In January 1989, the fourth project, the Chandramani Balwadi was started. Children from the economically weaker section of our society staying in close vicinity come to learn reading and writing. Classes are held five days a week for children of 5 to 14 years of age. Tiffin is given to them daily. Woollen clothes, blankets and cotton clothes are given once a year. There are about 100 students on roll in this project.

About 15 to 16 girls are given training in each of these skills. In order to equip these girls with the basic knowledge of computer application, there is a proposal to start a computer training course shortly.

Help to Students: Needy and meritorious students are given financial support regularly.

Relief and welfare : Assistance in food, clothes and medicines is given to the needy regularly.

Income and Expenditure: The recurring expenditure of the Nivedita Vidyamandir is met from the tuition fees paid by the students. The expenses of all other educational and cultural activities and all capital expenses are met by the Mission through donations.

Study Circles and Cultural Activities: The following activities are also conducted for ladies, once a week, in the centre:

a). Study of Scriptures in English and Bengali

Ramkrishna Sarada Mission, Khonsa, Arunachal Pradesh

PROLOGUE
Nearly three decades after independence, Arunachal Pradesh virtually remained a backwater untouched by the march of progress and civilization. Against this backdrop to create a resurgent India as envisioned by the patriot-saint Swami Vivekananda, the upliftment of its masses then, would constitute the first step. For this to happen, the benefit of education must percolate down the masses.
It was in the year 1972, that inspired by the visionary zeal of Sri K.A.A. Raja (Chief Commissioner and later Lt. Governor of Arunachal Pradesh), the A.P. administration approached the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission authorities to open an educational centre to disseminate knowledge and culture, to raise the status of the tribal women of Arunachal Pradesh and to improve their standard of living.
The School was formally inaugurated on the 17th February 1973. In March 1975, the school was shifted to its present permanent building the construction of which was made possible by a capital grant from the Central Government. It was declared open by Sm. Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister on the 19th November 1976.

IN RETROSPECT

Ramakrishna Sarada Mission, Khonsa has travelled a long way since it began its journey 35 years ago. It would be difficult to catalogue the dramatic transformation that has occurred in this area by the magic word ‘education’.
With an initial enrolment of 58 students in 1973, in three classes Preparatory, Class I & II, the school has now blossomed into a full-fledged residential school mainly catering to the all-round development of the tribal girl students of Arunachal Pradesh. The school is affiliated to CBSE, New Delhi and follows a10+2 pattern of education.
The institution stands today on a sprawling campus of 30.58 acres campus nestled in the Patkai ranges of the Himalayas at a height of about 3500 ft. above sea level, overlooking the lush green fields and forest. The campus accommodates in perfect alignment the hostel block with 7 hostels (which accommodates nearly 300 boarders), Dining Hall, auditorium, staff quarters and towering above all and standing like a sentinel – the Prayer Hall and a little away the school block adjacent to the orchard.

SALIENT FEATURES OF THE INSTITUTION
1. Well-equipped labs – Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Geography give them hands-on experience of science.
2. A well–stocked library-cum- reading room with over 9000 books ranging from story books, fiction, encyclopaedias, cultural literature, biographies and very useful reference books. The library subscribes to nearly 26 magazines and journals.
3. Keeping pace with the dynamics of change, the school could introduce Computer education with financial and infrastructural help from North Eastern Council and a Hon’ble M.P. of A.P.; not just as a subject but more importantly to augment and supplement learning. A step further, with the approval of the Board class X is offered IT as an additional subject and has set brilliant record with their lofty feat in the AISSE.

PHYSICAL & HEALTH EDUCATION
The institution believes in an ethos of ‘strong mind in a strong body’. Yoga and pranayama are regularly practised. Different Sports facilities are included such as – Badminton, Throw ball, Tennekoit, Shot-put etc. A new playground with gallery and modern facilities is in the hatchet. March Past, PT, Band Display are encouraged.

CULTURAL AND SPIRITUAL ETHOS
Swami Vivekananda had cautioned, “Learning science should not be at the expense of ancient spirituality”.
a) Daily prayers – morning and evening, bhajans, Vedic chanting and Gita chanting help in spiritual growth and harmony.
b) Festivals like Janmashthami, Saraswati Puja, Shivaratri, Christmas eve and birthdays of the Holy Trio are celebrated with deep involvement of children.
c) ‘A young plant needs to be hedged’, says Sri Ramakrishna. Through Vidyarthi Homa students take vows for higher values in life.
d) The values and virtues of Gurukula system are inextricably blended into the system. Importance of ‘dignity of labour’ is inculcated early in the students’ life. Daily duties like sweeping and cleaning dormitories, surroundings, classrooms, washing one’s own clothes, community serving, shrine work etc. while making them self-reliant also inspires in them an attitude of sharing and caring.
e) Environment education goes beyond the bounds of textbooks. Sensitivity to nature is an inherited quality. Children love to do gardening and are quite adept at it.
The institution, thus earnestly strives to create through its holistic approach a life-long learning culture for the harmonious development of personality – physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual based on the man-making, character building and nation-building ideas of Swami Vivekananada.

KHONSA VILLAGE PRIMARY SCHOOL
The Mission also runs a satellite school in its campus. It began as a small enterprise on 24th July 1979 with Sunday classes for the local tribal children in Khonsa village, gradually grew into tutorial classes and finally got transformed into a regular Primary School in 1987, affiliated to the Arunachal Pradesh Board, backed by the appeal of the Khonsa village Chief, village elders and local people. Nearly 203 students are studying in this school. Recently, its building received a face-lift and two more blocks were added to it. Basically incorporating the same syllabus and activities as the main school, the school has been making steady progress ever since its inception. Students after passing out mostly get admission into Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Tissa where they pursue their higher studies.

Ramakrishna Sarada Mission, Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh

The Ramakrishna Sarada Mission has been educating tribal girls in Arunachal Pradesh for the last 37 years, ever since 1973 with its school in Khonsa, a remote corner of the district of Tirap. The Khonsa school is now a premier quality educational institution, highly prized by the State. It is especially rewarding that so many tribal girls educated in the school have become well established in different abilities, an asset to their communities capable of solving social problems, and eager to serve their Motherland.

The success of the Khonsa school prompted requests from all over Arunachal Pradesh for the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission to develop similar schools in their other districts.

In 2007, the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission finally accepted the earnest invitation of the people of Dirang and their local MLAs and Ministers, to run a school in their district. There are nearly 420 villages in West Kameng and Tawang, mainly inhabited by the Monpa tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. As this locality is a border state with a low female rate, creating awareness of the need for women’s education will have a large social impact.

The Monpa tribal children, and especially the girls, will not only improve their own living conditions but will raise future generations with the values and motivation to put a proud smile on the face of our nation. India’s patriotic prophet Swami Vivekananda laid great emphasis on the education of women as a key factor in uplifting the masses and building a new India.

The new Dirang project was launched in February 2008 by the Chief Minister himself in the presence of the leading Monpas of the district. Ten acres of land were donated on the bank of the Kyamani River about 15 km from the Dirang Township.

Three years down the line a few buildings have come up, though much more needs to be done. The dedicated efforts of a few sincere people have made the construction a reality so far in the face of innumerable hurdles. Without their help this project would still be a dream. DoNER of the Central Ministry has provided funds for the construction of the school, the hostel, and several other buildings. The infrastructure is well underway, and requests are already being received for the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission to open the school this year.

Arunachal Pradesh, although famous for its scenic beauty, is still not a well- developed State and it lacks a stable economy. It will not be possible to sustain this project with State funds alone. This challenging project in the far Northeast, whichshares its borders with China and Bhutan, has fostered an overwhelming response from the general public all over India. What is needed now is the active cooperation
and collaboration from interested organizations throughout our country.

About the School

Ramakrishna Sarada Mission centre at Dirang was officially inaugurated by Most Revered Pravrajika Amalaprana Mataji, General Secretary, Sri Sarada Math & Ramakrishna Sarada Mission on the auspicious day of Buddha Purnima on 17th May 2011; school was started with 49 residential students from Arunachal Pradesh in general and from West Kameng and Tawang Districts in particular.

In each successive year a new class is added to accommodate the current batch of students and currently the student strength stands at 236 (2016-2017). Over the last 6 years the school has created a rigorous internal assessment system to evaluate the performance of students, including “Formative and Summative Tests”. The school lays great emphasis on developing the overall personality of the child, keeping the traditional customs as it is. To achieve this goal, several competitions and events including Recitation, Drawing, Extempore, Story Writing, Story Telling, Quiz, Science Day, Sports Day, Arunachal Day and National Youth Day are organized with much zeal. Many of these competitions are conducted by external organizations and Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Girls’ School has won the top prizes in most of these competitions. The students of the school have a special talent for painting and have participated in several competitions, including State Level.

Students have participated in Quiz Competitions conducted at National YAK Centre & won top prizes competing with other schools of the district

Students participate in the Science Exhibition conducted at National YAK Research Centre every year and have won top prizes

Regular extra-curricular activities, forming a part of their overall assessment include, Yoga, Drawing/Painting and Vocational Training. Vocational training includes embroidery, stitching and weaving which is separately taught, with a view to specifically promote the culture of the region.

The students of the school have a special talent for painting and have participated in several competitions, including State Level.

The school also runs the “Know Your Country” project, in which students and escorts from Kolkata visit the school. This project aims at increasing interaction amongst students from various regions and promoting exposure and awareness about our country & culture.

Apart from providing exposure to students to other regions in the country, the goal is to create a unified school, bringing together students from different regions in Arunachal Pradesh under one roof, to intermingle and learn from diversity.

How to integrate the students from the North-East with those from other regions of the country is one of the paramount goals of the institution. With this in mind, we are focused on creating an institution that provides the best-in-class facilities and resources to the students.

Building a culture of Discipline and Service

Building self-discipline and an attitude of service is strongly encouraged in the student through a process of allotting hostel and school routine duties for all students. Personal responsibility is expected for daily conduct and for the maintenance of harmony of the institution through a process of Continuous Assessment which evaluates students on discipline, behaviour and willingness to take up responsibilities in the betterment of their school.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Students learning stitching & embroidery as part of Vocational Training

Students learning the local art of weaving as part of Vocational Training

The Deputy Commissioner for West Kameng being shown students’ artwork

Apart from regular subjects, the children learn Art, Yoga, play a variety of Games and borrow books over the weekend from the School Library. Occasional trips outside the school are undertaken to explore the vast expanse of natural beauty, which surrounds the school.

The students are exposed to the richness of Ancient Indian History and Culture through the medium of audio-visual. Documentaries on India ranging from Partition of India, Bharat Ek Khoj Series, Upanishad Ganga Series, Discovery and National Geographic channel Series, Ramayana, Mahabharata and children’s movies are shown to the children regularly to expose them to the glory of our country. Weekends are often spent in gardening, cleaning the Mission Campus, playing indoor games in the Hostel courtyard or relaxing with a library book. On Saturdays, either a book reading or an informal chat with the children is conducted to share anecdotes and inspiring stories from the lives of Great Personalities and to allow the children an opportunity to interact closely with the staff.

As part of the yearly functions – children write scripts for dramas and stage the dramas with a variety of themes, the favourite themes being the Epics, Lives of Freedom Fighters such as Bhagat Singh and incidents from the lives of the Holy Trio – Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. Local Traditional Tribal Dances including Bamboo dance are often staged at these functions with the children dressing up in their traditional attire and displaying the uniqueness of their state using various materials. On this special occasion senior children prepare local dishes.
